Alonza William Guthrie

March 14, 1939 — May 14, 2014

Alonza William "Buck" Guthrie, 75 years old, of Harkers Island, was born on March 14, 1939 to Leslie and Kathleen Guthrie. He was known to his family as Buck. He was the second of nine children. When Buck was nine months old he was diagnosed with a mastoid that left him with the mind of a child until his passing on May 14, 2014.

A funeral will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at Harkers Island Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. David Adams, Anthony Nelson and Willis Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery.

As a child, growing up Buck loved to play with string that he could twirl between his fingers. He would take toilet tissue and tear it in strips and roll it up. Buck loved to throw feathers up in the air and watch it fall to the ground. He was never left alone. His mother Kathleen took care of him in the home until she became ill at the age of 75. His sister Nettie and husband Leslie Carroll took them in and cared for them until the passing of their mother. Nettie cared for Buck for three more years until his sister Merita and husband Dana Lloyd took him in their home and cared for him for eighteen years, until his passing.

Buck was loved by all and had the very best care that anyone could possibly have. Not only was Buck their brother, he was a little baby that they could love and nurture for many years.

Heaven’s gate swung open wide the day God called him home. Buck is now sitting in the arms of his heavenly father.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Kathleen Guthrie, one brother, Marion Guthrie, and two sisters, Darnell Guthrie and Margaret Garner.

He is survived by two sisters, Merita Guthrie and Nettie Guthrie; three brothers, Dennis Guthrie and wife Callie, Craig Guthrie and wife Veta, and Greg Guthrie, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 Friday at Harkers Island Pentecostal Holiness Church.
