Alford Joseph "Joe" Squires, Sr., 80, of Newport, NC, passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2017. He was born on September 14, 1937 in Apex, NC to the late Harvey McClellan Squires and the late Ruby Mae King Squires.

He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1984 after 18 years of service. He was also a Seaman Recruit in the US Navy Ready Reserves from 1958-1962. Most people remember him for his incredible love for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also had a love for sports. He was a die-hard NC State fan and over the years he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play baseball, football, softball and basketball - many of the same sports he played growing up and during his high school years at Apex High School and his short time at Michigan State University. He was very passionate about the love he had for his family and during the course of his life he made many long lasting friendships.

He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Prince of Willow Spring, NC; son Joey Squires of New Braunfels, TX; daughter Lisa A. Kimbro and husband Michael of Willow Spring, NC; son Michael Squires and wife Judi of Newport, NC; sister Marie Brown and husband Woodrow of Flagler's Beach, FL; grandchildren Meaghan Squires Price and husband Glenn of Fairfield, OH, Jennifer Prince of Atlanta, GA, Cameron Squires of Dandridge, TN, Chelsea Squires of Durham, NC, Allison Prince of Willow Spring, NC, Michael Squires of Newport, NC, Caroline Grace Kimbro of Willow Spring,NC, Jacob Kimbro of Willow Spring, NC; two step-grandchildren, Kayla Farlow of Newport, NC and Rachel Farlow of Newport, NC; One great-grandchild, Brayden Sexton of Fairfield, OH; and many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Faye Poole Squires; parents; brother Harvey Squires; sisters Ella Mae Stowell and Virginia Healy.

The family will receive friends from 5 pm-6 pm on Monday November 6, 2017, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel (550 W. Williams Street, Apex, NC 27502). A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the visitation in the chapel. Family will also be receiving friends at the home of Michael and Lisa Kimbro in Willow Springs.

The Squires family also welcomes you to join them for a Celebration of Life memorial service at the home of Ted and Jewel Ivey (1803 Hwy 24, Newport, N.C. 28570) at 2 pm, on Sunday, November 12, 2017.
