Alexander Charles Schmidt

Alexander C. Schmidt, 89, of Newport, died Sunday, May 29, 2016 at his home.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, June 3, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City with Rev. Billy Knox officiating.

Mr. Schmidt tried to join the US Army during World War II but was denied because of his hearing impairment. He still wanted to serve his country, so he went to work at Grumman Aviation where he worked on the tail section for the Grumman F6F Hellcat during World War II.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan McMahon and husband Charles and Allison Stebner and husband Daniel; son, Martin Schmidt and wife Genevieve; sister, Harriet Kraus and husband Wally; grandchildren, Kelly Beach, Courtney Cowley, Charles McMahon, Danielle Schmidt, Martin Schmidt, Thomas Stebner, and Timothy Stebner; and great-grandchildren, Sean Cowley, Jr., Caitlin Beach, and Emily Beach.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Marie Schmidt; parents, Louis and Gertrude Tilley Schmidt.
