July 1, 1919 — November 16, 2013

A. Wade Blackford, Sr., 94, of Morehead City, NC peacefully passed away Saturday, November 16th at Harborview Health Care Center.

Wade was born July 1, 1919 in Arlington, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Wade, Jr. (Linbe), Anna Zier and Woody; grandchildren Mallory Leonard (Darin), Capt. Connor Zier (Angela), Virginia Thomas (Gregg) and Sashell Blackford; step children Billy Cook and Anitra Crow,  step grandson Patrick Cook, and  several nieces and nephews.

Wade was a WWII decorated officer having earned a bronze star and purple heart. After the war, he returned to Corsicana, Texas where he and his wife, Virginia, founded Blackford Printing Company in 1946. He was the pioneer of offset printing and after almost 70 years, this business is still operating, owned by one of his employee’s daughter, Paula Sims Farmer and husband, Johnny.

He co-founded Corsicana National Bank and as its Director, Wade was most proud when he helped make it possible for women to become officers for the first time in the local banking industry. He also formed an oil company with Brian Jordan, Jr and later joined by his son, Wade, Jr.

A long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Wade served as Senior Warden and Acolyte Warden for many years. He was best known for his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh never stopped, as confirmed by those who cared for him the last years of his life. As a man of great faith and an enduring positive attitude, all who knew Wade loved and respected him.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Wright, daughter Anna Katrina Blackford, his second wife Jane Case, and step daughter Susan Dunn.
