Alan Gardner Ballard

Alan Gardner Ballard, 78, of Morehead City, passed away Friday, September 5, 2014 at his home.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Morehead City with Dr. Nate Leonard officiating.

Mr. Ballard was born in Norfolk, VA on June 18, 1935 to the late Anna Mae and J. Lloyd Ballard. He was a graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk and his beloved Virginia Military Institute, class of 1960. He proudly served his country in the US Army until honorably discharged, attaining the rank of Captain in Field Artillery. Mr. Ballard worked as a teacher for the Norfolk Public Schools. He was a licensed Physician's Assistant and taught surgical technology at the Elizabethon Paramedical Center for the James H. Quillen College of Medicine-East Tennessee State University. Mr. Ballard had a lifelong love of firearms, was a collector of new and old weapons, and was often called upon to verify authenticity of collector pieces. He was a former Chairman of the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church in Morehead City and an active member of the Chancery Choir.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Glenda Day French Ballard. Left to cherish his memory is his brother, Bruce W. Ballard and sister-in-law, Cynthia K. Ballard of Portsmouth, VA; nieces Lara A. Ballard of Washington, DC and Amy Riley of Apex, NC; cousins Maria D. Godel; Sandra G. Cone; Harry Gornto; and four great-grand nieces and nephews.

The family expresses thanks for the care and compassion of the many friends who made his last days more bearable.
